The sixth and final Interclub round was held at Prospect in overcast and windy conditions. Reminiscent of the way the season started, there was rain overnight but it cleared before the start of play. Then, once again, more showers arrived just after we had finished. The cosy deal between the pétanque gods and the weather gods still seems to be in place.
The Round 6 winners were ESP’s Paul Newman, Ha Nguyen & Van Nguyen. Congratulations to Paul for making his first League medal a gold one. Major kudos also to Van and Ha, who have become the first players in the history of the competition to win five rounds in a season. In addition, this result makes it just the second time that a single club has taken all the gold medals from a full season. The other occasion (also ESP) was 17 years ago.
Finishing in second place were Alain Rousse, Kenny May & Lionel Pujol from Club d’Adelaide. Joining them on the podium was another Adelaide trio, Jean May, Louis Oltarczy & Jean-Paul Bouyer. Their combined effort was more than enough to see off a late challenge from Adelaide Hills for second place on the ladder.
It was also the first time this season that any club had outscored ESP in terms of championship points. However, the three points they gained barely made a dent in the unassailable 87 point advantage held by ESP after Round 5. At season’s end, we can now formally congratulate Eastern Suburbs on securing their eighth consecutive league championship.
As for the other clubs, their results on the day largely reflected their established position on the ladder, so there were no changes. The only positions in close contention were the bottom two. However, Gawler managed to hold on to the wooden spoon despite an impressive debut performance from their new recruit, 10-year-old Riley Gejas – a sign, perhaps, that they might have better things ahead for next season.
Thanks to the Prospect Club for hosting the event and to all the umpires for their ongoing contribution.
