SAPL Interclub Round 6  –  15 June 2014 – Eastern Suburbs Pétanque Club         game details

The final chapter of the 2013/14 season started in damp and misty conditions, which took some time to clear, but the weather did improve somewhat over the course of the day. There were even a few welcome bursts of sunshine at times and, thankfully, no heavy showers.

It was an exciting finale and a fitting end to a season that, all the way through, has been a closely-fought contest between Club d’Adelaide and the Prospect club. Just like last year, Prospect started the final day edged ahead on the premiership table by the slenderest margin of three points…

At lunch time, after the prelim. rounds, the competition remained evenly poised. Prospect and Adelaide each had one team in the top group of four (playing off for 1st, 2nd, 4th or 7th) and one team in the second group (finishing 3rd, 5th, 8th or 11th). In each group, the key match-up came straight away in the fourth round. If either side could win both of these two crucial head-to-head games the title was theirs. But the result was one apiece.

Still evenly poised, the season now hinged on four games in the last round, all against ‘neutral’ opponents. Two wins to Adelaide would give them 1st and 8th placings and a tally of 39 championship points. At the same time, Prospect had a chance for 3rd and 4th which together would also yield 39 points. In that case, Prospect would win the title by the three point margin they started with. Alternatively, if each club lost one of their two games and won the other it would be 33 points to Adelaide, 30 points to Prospect, and the championship would be tied!

In the end, though, it was only Adelaide who managed to win both their games, thus securing the premiership by a margin of 6 points. Congratulations to them and commiserations to Prospect, pipped at the post for the second year in a row. Stars of the day were the Adelaide trio of Dominique, Tony & Louis, who powered their way to the gold medal position with scores of 13-1 and 13-0 in the semi-final and the final.

For Eastern Suburbs, the final round of the season (at their home ground) is traditionally a time to turn out in force with all their big guns and come from behind, storming home to challenge for the premiership. Not so this year. Unfortunately, a social occasion the night before took its toll and certain key personnel were missing. This perhaps epitomised what has been a disappointing season for ESP, plagued by poor attendance. They still finished third in the championship, but with a points tally that’s closer to fourth than second.

The big improvers this year were fourth-placed FAB, who in their first three seasons were more concerned with the battle for ‘not last’. However, they started the present season with a highly creditable haul of 42 points in Round 1 (for 2nd and 4th placings) and proved it was no fluke by finishing the same way in Round 6. The two teams involved were the same but their order was reversed. On this occasion, it was Craig, Erica & Rae who took home the silver medals. Well done guys.

In recent years, fourth place on the ladder has been something akin to a second division premiership, as the minor clubs fight for the title of ‘best of the rest’ behind ‘the big three’. If the present trend continues, however, we may soon be talking about FAB as one of the ‘big four’.
Adelaide Hills came into the final round still harbouring ambitions of snaring fourth place for themselves. They only had to gain 6 points to catch FAB, but it was always going to be a tough ask with only one team in the field against FAB’s three. Sadly, they didn’t even come close, finishing a whopping 45 points behind. Their fifth placing and overall tally of 75 points was exactly the same as last year.

As for Gawler and Port Noarlunga, it was not a particularly memorable season. Gawler could not seem to recapture the form that took them to fourth last time around, while Port Noarlunga struggled to score any championship points at all. Let’s hope for better things next year.

Once again, the competition has been played in the best of spirits throughout the series, with a healthy balance between competitive rivalry and friendly camaraderie. Just as it should be. All we need now is a few more players, but thanks to all who did participate.

SA State Singles Championship – 4 May 2014 – Club de pétanque d’adelaide.

The 2013/14 State Singles Championships were held at Club d’Adelaide in fine and mild conditions.

In the Open, there was a sense of deja vu as Lionel Chazal dominated the proceedings once again with a classy display of petanque skills. For the third year in a row, he took out the Singles championship by defeating Alexi in the final. Adding to the feeling of familiarity, it was also the second year in a row that Alexi got to this position by beating Dominique in the semi-final.

The other standout performer of the day was Phil Pollard, who collected some big scalps on his way to making the final four. But it was in the semi-final that he oh so nearly got the biggest scalp of all. He certainly gave Lionel an almighty scare — at one stage holding a 9-2 lead. However, the champion eventually rallied to take the match 13-12. Nevertheless, as the only over-60s player to make the semis, Phil earned the title of Open Veterans Champion.

In the Ladies competition, Tory McBride took out the honours. She faced stiff competition from the defending champion, Rada, but it was Tory who prevailed in their head-to-head preliminary game and again in the final. After having made it to the pointy end of the competition in a number of previous state championships, this is Tory’s first state title.

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all who participated.

SAPL Interclub Round 5 – 16 March 2014 – Adelaide Hills Pétanque Club         game details           pics

The plan was to hold the Adelaide Hills round in March this season, rather than May, because Stirling can be rather cold and wet in May as we found out last year. Good plan. In March, it seems to be a bit less cold, and not as windy, and the rain’s not as heavy or as persistent.

After a couple of rounds totally dominated by the top three clubs, the theme of Round 5 was: ‘The minnows fight back’. This time, Gawler, FAB and Adelaide Hills each had a team in the top five and between them took out more than half of the first nine placings — a significant turnaround after having only one team in the top twelve, and nothing better than seventh, in the previous rounds.

The Gawler team of Luke, Rob and Stan performed strongly all day, defeating a string of worthy opponents and putting up a good fight in the final, on their way to a silver medal. A third placing to FAB, meanwhile, was enough for them to maintain their six point buffer ahead of Adelaide Hills, in the battle for fourth overall. As for Port Noarlunga, they may not have finished in the points this time but they did turn up to play, which is an improvement.

There may have been a few upsets elsewhere, but the gold medal winners were no surprise. Congratulations once again to Alexi, George and Tim, from ESP. Their win earned Eastern Suburbs some precious championship points, but, with one round to go, they really also needed a second team in the top four to get within striking distance for the championship. ESP have a history of finishing the season strongly. Who can forget their come-from-behind victory of 2011-12? Last season, they came within a whisker of something even more spectacular. However, this time they have set themselves a truly monumental task, needing to overcome a 39 point deficit in the final round. That’s not impossible, but…

Barring miracles, the championship is now down to a two-way contest. The battle at the top that has gone on all season between Prospect and Club d’Adelaide remains a tight affair. On this occasion, it all came down to a crucial last-round play-off for fourth or seventh. Victory in this game handed Prospect the edge in the overall standings, converting a nine point deficit to a three point advantage.

After the fifth and penultimate round last season, the situation at the top of the table was almost identical. At that stage, Prospect also held a three point lead. Can Adelaide claw their way back to snatch victory, again? Or will Prospect hold on this time? Stay tuned, as we head towards the final showdown.

Coonawarra Clasic Clash Pétanque – Sat 8 & Sun 9 February 2014   results below

18th Coonawarra Vignerons Classisc Pétanque Tounament
(South Australian players and Clubs in blue)

Great Petanque Weekend

The Coonawarra Park was the venue for 18th Annual “Coonawarra Vignerons Classic Clash” Petanque Tournament held over the weekend of the 8th and 9th February, which was hailed a huge success by all who attended. The tournament provided some fierce interstate rivalry between South Australian, Victorian and New South Wales teams over the two days of competition.

This event run by the Coonawarra Petanque Club is becoming recognised as one of the biggest and best tournaments in Australia. With the help of the Coonawarra Vignerons Association and other local sponsors, teams vied for over $6000 in cash and prizes, and Championship honours.

The extremely successful weekend had nearly 200 players entered, creating 60 teams in the competition, travelling from Melbourne, Adelaide, regional Victoria and Newcastle along with a good turn out of local teams attending.

Saturday was an extremely hot day, with the organisers calling a halt to play early in the afternoon for a couple of hours, until the cool change came through. This caused the cancellation of one ‘Round’ of games, but the local team of Andrew Jackman, Jean-Paul Bouyer and Louis Oltarczy seemed to handle the heat well and finished in “First Place” after the 5 Qualifying Rounds, then with local teams of  Grant Hetherington, Brian Wagner, Simon Fennel, and Guy Detot, Guy Bahler, Jean-Luc Domergue finishing 9th and 11th respectively in the top 16 teams.

On Sunday, in ideal conditions, the final rounds of the tournament were dominated by the Adelaide Clubs this year, and a spectacular Grand Final was played between two teams from ‘Eastern Suburbs Petanque Club’, seeing Sukrit Vaswani, Ken Maski and David Lefer take out the Championship 13 – 6, giving them a clean sweep for the weekend by not loosing a game.

‘I really enjoy coming to the Coonawarra tournament, it has a great atmosphere and the standard of the competitors is excellent. The number of people attending is a testament to the quality of this event,’ said Sukrit Vaswani, from Adelaide, a regular visitor to the tournament and captain of the winning team.

The high standard of play by the local teams was seen through Grant Hetherington, Brian Wagner, Simon Fennel, finishing in 7th place overall and Guy Detot, and his two friends from Melbourne winning the ‘Consolante” event.

‘The whole weekend has been beautiful and was enjoyed by all who came along”. said Guy Detot, President Coonawarra Petanque Club. ‘The influx of people for the weekend has been tremendous  for the region, and we expect to see even more people coming along in the future’.

SA State Doubles Championship – 8 December 2013 – Adelaide Hills Pétanque Club, Stirling

With the picturesque surrounds of the Adelaide Hills Petanque Club, and the luxury of their newly-completed clubrooms, conditions were ideal for the State Doubles Championships. The weather was a little sultry – warm and humid, but with a heavy cloud cover to keep the summer sun at bay. Thankfully, the forecast rain and thunderstorms stayed away.

The Open and Ladies tournaments were both of a high standard and closely fought. The evenness of the competition was evident from the fact that, in both cases, every team won at least one game and every team lost at least one game.

In the Ladies, it was Judith and Rada who came from behind in the final to snatch victory and claim the honours. Another addition to already bulging trophy cabinets, this was not the first state title for either of them but it was the first they’ve won together as a team. For Judith, it’s been eleven years since she won the inaugural Ladies Doubles in 2002, but, like a fine wine, she just seems to keep getting better. The rest of us can only aspire to be still winning state championships in our eighties.

An honourable mention must also go to their opponents in the final, Llianne and Selina, who were in excellent form all day. Undefeated right through the preliminary rounds, and with a healthy lead in the final, they picked the worst possible time to get ‘stuck on twelve’. This game of ours can be cruel, sometimes.

In the Open, some players were bemused by the slightly unconventional tournament structure, but most could appreciate the logic of being ranked in pools against other teams that played exactly the same four opponents in the opening rounds. It minimises the effect of ‘luck of the draw’. However, one consequence of teams in pools not playing each other was the need for a tie-breaker to decide the last place in the final eight – a bit of extra excitement for the day.

Most of the close games were in the earlier rounds, but in the semis and the final there was no stopping Wendy and Tim, the new state champions. Well done. Wendy adds an Open title to her already impressive collection of wins in Ladies Doubles and Triples championships, while for Tim it’s his first Doubles title, following previous wins in the Triples.

Thanks to everyone who participated and all those who helped make it such a great day.

SAPL Interclub Round 4 – 24 November 2013 – Club de pétanque d’adelaide                           game details

Another disappointing turnout for Round 4, but those who did come to play were mostly in good spirits and good form, following our state team’s recent success in the Inter-State.

In many ways, it felt like a case of deja vu. Seventeen teams, fine and mild conditions, a change of venue – the list of similarities between Round 4 and Round 3 is really quite remarkable…

Once again, it was near total domination by the traditional ‘big three’ clubs, who again got all of their teams into points-scoring positions. In this case, that meant taking ten of the first eleven spots between them, leaving the ‘minnow’ clubs to fight over the crumbs. Of the latter, the one team that did manage to intrude into the middle placings was exactly the same team as last time (from Adelaide Hills).

Once again, Eastern Suburbs were well represented and performed strongly. This time they took out three of the top four positions but, once again, they missed the crucial top spot and the big points reward that goes with it.
Once again, that honour went to Club d’Adelaide. Once again it was Dom the Dominator. Congratulations Dominique, Rada and Mark. For Dom, it may have been his second gold medal in a row, but for Mark it was his first ever (well done). Another first-time winner. Just like last round.

In the battle for the premiership, Prospect once again lost ground to their main rival, Adelaide, but still managed to secure enough points to limit the damage. However, Adelaide’s Rd 4 victory was enough to move them into top postion now, with two rounds to go. ESP have flown past FAB into third place, but are still a long way behind the competition leaders.

Once again, FAB were unable to replicate their heroics of Round 1, although this time they at least managed to snatch 12th position for three points. Once again, Adelaide Hills moved six points closer, in the the fight for fourth. Once again, Port Noarlunga did not manage to field a single team. Yet, once again, Gawler were unable to capitalize on the situation by scoring some points and building up a bit more of a lead.

Thanks to the Adelaide club for stepping in to assist Gawler with hosting.

SAPL Interclub Round 3 – 27 October 2013 – Prospect Pétanque Club                           game details

Not too hot, not too cold, not too sunny, not too rainy – what more could you ask for? It’s a pity only seventeen teams managed to turn up and make the most of it. So it was back to a single division for Round 3.

The most notable feature of the day was the complete dominance of the three traditional ‘heavyweights’ over the other four clubs, to a degree probably never seen before in the history of the league. Between them, their eleven teams were all in the top twelve while a 9th-placed Adelaide Hills team was the only one of the others to score championship points.

Taking home the gold, the only undefeated team, were Messieurs Pollard, Palmer and Pierre, from Club d’Adelaide. A well-deserved victory to three players who have performed strongly all season. Congratulations gentlemen (and Dominique), especially to Ernie, who made his first League medal a gold one.
Well done also to Tory, Lionel and Dave, who looked all set to follow their Round 2 victory with another, but fell over at the final hurdle.

In the season standings, there was no change at the bottom of the table but things have tightened up at the top. Taking 1st and 4th positions in this round was enough for Adelaide to gain 15 points on Prospect, who still lead the competition but with the margin reduced to a mere 6 points.

Eastern Suburbs, meanwhile, came out in force this time (unlike Rounds 1 and 2), including most of their big guns. They did well to get four teams in the top seven, but missed out on the crucial top two positions where the big points are. Hence, they did no more than keep pace with Prospect, and lost further ground against Adelaide. It was enough, however, for them to move into fourth place ahead of Adelaide Hills, and they’re closing rapidly on FAB.

Thanks to the Prospect Club for taking over the role of host.

SAPL Interclub Round 2 – 22 September 2013 – Club de pétanque d’adelaide                     game details

On a perfect spring day, a much improved turnout for Round 2 saw the return of two divisions, for the first time in over a year, and the standard format with four pools of four.

In Division I, the competition seemed a bit more evenly matched than usual, with more close games than floggings. No team managed to win all five games. The general standard of play also seemed unusually high (almost as if lots of people had suddenly started practicing).

At the end of the day, it was the two Prospect teams that prevailed, with Tory, Lionel & Dave victorious over Mike, Brett & Allan in an all-Prospect final. This, of course, gives them the maximum possible club score of 54 points for the round. Well done guys.

Not surprisingly, Prospect are now at the top of the premiership table, 21 points clear of Adelaide. However, Adelaide also put in a strong performance in Rd 2, earning 39 points for 3rd and 4th place. In contrast, FAB could not repeat their Rd 1 performance and have dropped to third overall, whilst ESP fell further behind the leaders. At least ESP now have some points on the board, and have climbed to fifth on the ladder, but they’re still 21 points adrift of fourth-placed Adelaide Hills. Meanwhile, Gawler have moved ahead of Port Noarlunga into the ‘not-last’ position.

In Division II, the Eastern Suburbs team of Jenny, Dee & Sandy went undefeated to take top spot ahead of Gawler. However, all teams won at least one game and the remaining points were shared between several other clubs.

Thanks to the Club d’Adelaide for hosting.

Anthony Pietsch, Tournament Director, (22 September 2013)

SA State Triples Championship – 25 August 2013 – Eastern Suburbs Pétanque Club

Just like last year’s SAPL State Triples Championship, the 2013/14 event was greeted with a lovely fine and partly sunny day that seemed near-perfect after such a long stretch of dismal weather. Together with the good turn-out and the friendly camaraderie that was evident all day, amidst the tight competition which everyone took that little bit more seriously, the weather and the setting all made for an excellent day. Thanks to the Eastern Suburbs Club for being such good hosts, despite being a bit short-handed.

As for the competition, the standard was high and there were many great battles throughout the day. None moreso than the epic grand finale — a mighty fine exhibition of patience and concentration together with some impressive skills displayed by both sides. A game well and truly befitting a Championship final.

Congratulations to Alexi, George and Arwed — victors and State Champions — who, despite one hiccup in the third game (see below), continued with the rich vein of form they’ve been enjoying lately. It’s Alexi’s second State Triples title and a first for George and Arwed. Well done.
Well done too to Sukrit, David and Rory, runners up, who tested them to the limit and certainly deserved to be in the final. Between them, they managed to keep the spectators enthralled (for hours).

Commiserations, together with an honorable mention, must also go to Paul, Craig and Sandy. Caught in ‘the pool of death‘ in the prelims, they managed to secure a victory against Alexi, George and Arwed (something of a rare occurrence these days), only to be squeezed out of the top half of the draw on nothing more than points difference (by the very two teams that went on to contest the final). Then, just to complete their misery, they went on to power their way through to the final of the Consolante, only to be pipped at the post by a rag-tag team of hill-billies who, looking at the day as a whole, you would have to say peaked at the right time.

Thanks to all who participated.

Anthony Pietsch, Tournament Director, (25 August 2013)

(The fact that the three strong teams named above, all from the same club, were pitted together in the preliminaries, just goes to illustrate the vagaries you can get with a truly random draw. It should [I wish] help people appreciate the seedings and other procedures we have in place for the Interclub competition, that balance the draw and help avoid intra-club match-ups in the early rounds.)

(The State Championship is a competition between individual teams, not between clubs. Unlike the Interclub, it’s a good opportunity for some to maybe team up with someone from another club that they don’t normally play with. Well done, Valmai.)

SAPL Interclub Round 1 – 28 July 2013- Prospect

With many regular players sunning themselves in France or otherwise engaged, season 2013/14 started with a disappointing turn-out of just 15 teams. However, those who made the effort to attend were duly rewarded with lovely sunny weather and great competition (as well as championship points, of course).

Honours for the day went to Mike, Brett and Allan — the first time they’ve occupied the top step of the podium for a couple of years, despite consistently strong performances.

Congratulations also to FAB, who fielded three teams for the first time and immediately reaped the rewards. Taking out second and fourth positions was enough to give them top spot on the premiership table, 3 points ahead of Prospect. To put this in perspective, their 42 championship points from this one round already puts them well ahead of their previous best tally for an entire season. In fact, it is not far short of the sum of all the points they’ve earned since joining the competition (three years ago)! Could this be a sign of things to come?

The other notable result was that Eastern Suburbs, the powerhouse club for so many years, currently sits in last place (equal with Gawler) after failing to score any championship points. That’s what can happen when you only field a single team. It seems they haven’t learnt much from last season, when they gave up so much ground early in the season that their late charge fell agonizingly short.

Thanks to all who did participate. Let’s see if we can do a bit better for the next round.

Anthony Pietsch, Tournament Director, (28 July 2013)
