This year’s State Doubles Championships were held at Club d’Adelaide. The weather conditions followed a pattern that has become strangely familiar this season. It was wet on Saturday with a forecast of more significant rain on Sunday. But it turned out to be a lovely, mostly sunny day until a few showers came in the evening soon after we were finished.
The Women’s championship featured a strong (but disappointingly small) field of teams. Only one pair, Kathy Gepp & Miriam Peik, made it through the five preliminary rounds undefeated. However, in the end, they fell at the final hurdle and had to settle for a runners-up trophy. Taking the title with a victory in the game that matters most were Ha Nguyen & Selina Dally. A second for Ha, this was Selina’s ninth State Doubles title in the space of twelve years.
The Open competition threw up a few surprises, the most notable being the hot favourites getting knocked out in the quarter final. At the end of the day, it came down to a final between four players all vying for their first State Doubles title. That achievement went to Ray Drummond & Lionel Pujol, who also picked up their first State Triples gong earlier this year. The runners up were Brett Williams & Gavin Scott, both equalling their PB’s in this event.Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to Club d’Adelaide for hosting the event and to Roland Peik for taking on umpiring duties.
