This year’s SA Mixed Doubles Championship was held at Prospect. After several late withdrawals we were left with 24 teams.
It would seem that the pétanque gods have done a good deal with the weather gods. In a scenario remarkably similar to the Interclub event held three weeks earlier, there was a rather grim weather forecast for up to 15mm of rain but it turned out to be a quite pleasant sunny day. On both occasions, the rain stopped at about 3am with not another drop until just after 5pm.
Using the Swissish system, only three teams could get through the preliminary rounds without a loss and these three all stayed that way through to the semi-finals. But there can only be one winner in the end and no-one was too surprised to see Ha & Van Nguyen taking that honour, making it three out of three from their last three appearances in this event. However, it wasn’t all plain sailing.
In particular, it was Melissa & Gavin Scott who got the early ascendancy in an exciting final. They put up a very good fight, with a 10-3 advantage at one point, but eventually had to settle for the runners-up trophies.
Thanks to Brett Williams for taking on the umpiring duties and to the Prospect club and volunteers for hosting the day.
