Another good turnout of 32 teams fronted up for the final and deciding round of the 2023/24 Interclub season.
Most of the positions on the ladder were still in contention, including the premiership itself, but second-placed Adelaide needed an exceptional result to reel in ESP. Some of the cards fell into place for Club d’Adelaide, who have been resurgent this season after languishing in fifth place for a couple of years.
It began with an upset in the first round that took the competition’s dominant combination of Ha, Van & Vincent out of contention (and put an end to their record-breaking winning streak). Then the Adelaide trio of Dominique Pierre , Lionel Pujol & Jean-Luc Gonnet did the job of winning all five games to secure the gold medals and 30 valuable points for their club.
However, ESP also had a few cards to play… Not to be denied, Eastern Suburbs finished with two teams in the top four including the bronze medallists, Arwed Turon, Dave Ward & George Lainas, which was enough for them to see off the challenge and secure the title. This is their sixth consecutive premiership and takes their overall tally to eleven, moving them ahead of Adelaide who have won the competition ten times.
The silver medals in Round 6 went to Ned Dally, Selina Dally & Deric Oehlers from Novar Gardens, helping to secure third position on the final ladder for the third year in row, with an increased margin ahead of Adelaide Hills. Congrats to Ned for his first League medal and to Deric, whose second podium appearance this season was also a personal best.
Thanks to the Prospect club for hosting the event and providing a tasty lunch, and to all who have contributed throughout the season.
