2021/2022 SA State Mixed Doubles Championship
This year’s State Mixed Doubles Championship was held at Club de Petanque d’Adelaide, in fine and very comfortable autumn conditions. Twenty-five teams were in attendance, just short of last year’s record, despite COVID still having an impact on some players’ availability.
With an ambience that tends to be a bit more relaxed than the other State Championships, the results suggest a rather competitive tournament and there were quite a few serious contenders. No-one got through the entire day unscathed.
Peaking at the right time is what it’s all about in these circumstances – if you’re going to have a dud game it’s best to get it out of the way in the first round. That’s exactly what Rada & Dominique Pierre did, on their way to the ultimate glory, and their peak was nothing short of majestic. In the knockout rounds after lunch they played some superlative petanque, conceding just two or three points against each of three very high quality opponents. This is Dom & Rada’s second time as Mixed Doubles champions, having also won the inaugural event in 2016.
The runners up trophies went to Deb Rodda & Raja Jamaleddine, while Selina Dally & Alexi Alexi took out the Consolante. Plaudits also go to Colleen Holy & Dirk Seret, winners of the Knockout Challenge, and Janet Jenkin & Michael Frodyma in the Conviviale.
Thanks to the Adelaide club for hosting the event and putting on yet another splendid lunch. Thanks also to Brett Williams and Mike Read for taking on the umpiring duties.
