2014-2015 SA State Doubles Championship – 26 October 2014 – Prospect Pétanque Club
This year’s State Doubles Championships were held in warm but cloudy conditions at the Prospect Petanque Club.
Congratulations to Raja and Arwed, who put in a commanding performance to become the new OpenState Champions. Undefeated in the preliminary rounds, they conceded just a solitary point in the semi-final then repeated the feat in the final, against Sukrit and James.
No strangers to the winner’s podium, this was Raja’s first state championship in the doubles category while it was Arwed’s second. Raja now joins a very elite group of players with the distinction of having a complete set of state titles – in Singles, Doubles and Triples – on their CV.
In the Ladies competition it was Selina and Jenny who prevailed, after an epic battle with Tory and Valmai that spanned the course of two games. It began when the two teams met in the fifth and final preliminary round. Tory and Valmai, undefeated to that point, were already qualified for the final. However, Selina and Jenny needed to win in order to join them. They achieved this by the narrowest of margins, after what was possibly the longest game of the day. Then it was back into the fray against the same opponents on the same piste. With the same result.
The victory gave Selina her maiden state title, improving on her second placing in last year’s doubles championship. For Jenny, it was her third doubles title but the first for some years. Congratulations to them both.

SAPL Interclub Round 2 – 21 September 2014 – Gawler Pétanque Club game details
It was a day for celebration as the Gawler Petanque Club combined league hosting duties with the official opening of its new premises. Everyone was mightily impressed with the interesting variety of playing surfaces and the attractive tree-lined surrounds, including a simply stunning feature tree. It was also great to have on-site facilities and clubrooms, which will serve as an excellent base for the club in the years ahead.
On the pistes, it was business as usual as the heavyweight clubs reasserted their dominance. The big winners were Club d’Adelaide, taking first and third places on the day. After the upsets of Round 1, the premiership table has now reverted to a more familiar scenario…
It’s tight at the top, with Club d’Adelaide ahead by the tiniest of margins over Prospect, and ESP not too far behind. Gawler are chasing Adelaide Hills in the battle for fourth, followed by Port Noarlunga, leaving FAB languishing in last place.
Anthony Pietsch, Tournament Director, (21 September 2014)

SA State Triples Championship – 31 August 2014 – Port Noarlunga Pétanque Club
A small field of ten dedicated teams contested the 2014-15 State Triples Championship at Port Noarlunga, in fine and mild but windy conditions.
The new champions are Sukrit, Louis and Lionel, who survived a scare in the preliminaries but managed to squeeze into the top four by a margin of one point. Their opponents in the final were the local team of Raymond, Peter and Will.
Thanks to all those who did manage to participate.

SAPL Interclub Round 1 – 27 July 2014 – Prospect Pétanque Club game details
The new season opened in fine, if somewhat chilly, conditions. As usual for the first round of the season, everyone starts on an equal footing. There are no seedings, no pools, no finals and no ‘snakes and ladders’. Instead, it’s just a simple five game draw with placings decided by wins and points – a random format that often throws up a few surprises. This occasion was no exception, with none of the usual suspects making it to the podium positions and a number of personal best results being recorded by their replacements.
Winners on the day were Greg, Brian & another bloke, from the Adelaide Hills club, taking the honours after a hard-fought one point win in the last game. For Adelaide Hills, this was their first outright win in more than four years. For Brian and the other bloke, it was their first.
In second place, Jenny, Sandy & Dee, from ESP, were unlucky to miss out by just a solitary point, having also gone through the day undefeated. Nevertheless, Sandy’s silver medal was a personal best in league competition, for Jenny it was an equal PB, whilst Dee collected her first league medal.
The third-placed team of Grant, Dick and Ana, from Prospect, also deserves a mention. In particular, Ana achieved the distinction of taking home a medal in her very first league appearance. For Dick, it was also his first podium finish. Well done to all the place-getters.
From a club perspective, the results were remarkably even. In fact, each of the seven clubs finished with a team in the top eight! This has never happened before in the history of the competition and stands in contrast to several recent rounds that were totally dominated by just three clubs.
Not surprisingly, then, the premiership table after Round 1 is also a little different to usual. Eastern Suburbs are in top spot, a position they once monopolized but have not held since their come-from-behind win three seasons ago. In second are Adelaide Hills — one has to go back even further to find the last time that was the case — while Prospect are third.
