The fifth and final round of another COVID-interrupted Interclub season was held in June – the reserve day on the calendar. The conditions were better than average in what has been a very wet month. A couple of early showers had players scurrying for brollies and raincoats, but they were only brief and most of the day was fine and sunny.
It was not the closest end result we’ve had, but this has been a very competitive season throughout. Coming into the deciding round, all of the top positions were up for grabs and five clubs were still a mathematical chance to take the title. However, Eastern Suburbs had put themselves in the box seat in Round 4. This time they missed out on the podium positions, but two teams in the top six earned them enough points to hold on to their advantage. The South Australian Petanque League held Round 5 of its 2021-2022 InterClub competition on Sunday 26th June 2022. The tournament was hosted by the Novar GardensPetanque Club.

The penultimate SAPL Interclub round was held at Prospect with 29 teams in attendance. The weather was surprisingly pleasant – cool but fine with plenty of nice sunshine. After some ominous forecasts in the days leading up, we were fortunate that the approaching big storm waited until the evening before it hit.
The championship race has been very tight up to this point, with five clubs all jostling for the top positions. On this occasion, it was Eastern Suburbs who seized the initiative. With three teams finishing in the top six, the club has pulled away from the chasing pack and opened up a commanding lead at the top of the table. While not impossible, it would take something special from another club to catch them from here, with one round to go.Continue reading
